Help Me Go Green

My Grease Car Project

Every time the price of gasoline (or diesel) goes up, I feel like my blood pressure does also.  What are we supposed to do?  Personally, I’m a conspiracy theorist when it comes to this subject, but I don’t want to vent all of my political views here…

What I do want to do is throw up a giant middle finger to the oil industry!  Since I’m in no position to stop driving altogther (I live in a rural area, and a hundred other excuses–including just plain enjoying driving), I need an alternative.  I’ve done a lot of reading online about what types of alternatives are out there and available, like electric cars, bicycles, hybrids and even motorcycles (my wife, it seems, is against this last idea–not for everyone; just for me) but none of those options really have all the things I’m looking for.  I’ll be honest with you; I want it all.  I want to be able to drive a nice car, but I don’t want to pay exorbitant prices for gas.  So…

I’ve decided to convert a diesel engine to run on vegetable oil (used, preferrably).  This is no small task, it seems, so this is the very beginning of my project.  There are a few major tasks involved:

  1. Purchase a car with a diesel engine.
  2. Purchase a conversion kit.
  3. Install/have said conversion kit installed.
  4. Secure used vegetable oil for use in said vehicle.

The most difficult task for me is number 1, because I need to actually find a suitable vehicle and then purchase it.  This is where I hope you’ll help me.  No, I’m not asking you to pay for it ;-)  But a little help would be greatly appreciated.  In return, I’ll post the progress of my project and the details that may make it easier for you to do the same thing, if you’re so inclined.

Around this website you’ll find links to merchants or products.  If you’re already going to buy one of these, why not contribute to the project at the same time?  I’ll also include a link to donate if you’d like to help but don’t need anything else.  Most of this project will be financed by me, with what little discretionary income I can scrape up.  But every little bit helps, so please consider contributing to my project.  Enough said.

So, this is my first post about this project, and I hope to have more soon.  I’m off to look at auctions and other venues for securing just the right vehicle for this project.

Have a green day!
